Studio Job (Belgium)

Studio Job, (Job Smeets + Nynke Tynagel) is known for their rebellious, scale-less way of creating an own universe. The objects are often based on personal fascinations varying from unique pieces, editions, installations, interiors and assignments for public space. The way Studio Job is walking a tightrope between design and art gave the work an autonomous position in international design. More than ones Studio Job created a fresh discussion within on the existing norms of the contemporary field.

Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel formed Studio Job after graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven back in 2000. Based in Antwerp the duo is currently working on a collection for the New York Moss Gallery. Entitled Home Work and described by the designers as 'Domestic Totems and Tableaux', the range consists of seven polished bronze and glass pieces including a stack of pans, an umbrella stand, a cookie tin and a lantern. The finished pieces will be displayed in a venue in the Zona Tortona and will be the Moss Gallery’s first outing at the Milan Furniture Fair.

What else are you presenting at this year’s Salone?

Silverware in 24K white gold mosaic for Bisazza at Super Studio Pui; ready to use objects in tin for Thomas Eyck at Spazio Rosanna Orlandi; and woven fabric by Edra, produced by the Dutch Textile museum and presented by Dilmos.

How many years have you been attending the Salone?

Our first Salone was in 1996, then we skipped two years and have been going every year since 1999.

What are you most looking forward to about being in Milan this year for the Salone?

Seeing all the work finished.

What are you dreading, if anything, about this year’s fair?

Stupid questions.

Milan 2007: Studio Job & Jaime Hayon for Bisazza

Posted by Yanko Design in Salone Del Mobile, Exhibitions , April 20, 2007 3:49 am

Having highlighted the two installations by Jaime Hayon and Studio Job in our Salone preview, we couldn’t wait to see the finished pieces. And we certainly weren’t disappointed.Studio Job’s Silver Ware’ installation was spectacularly show-stopping. Gaudy but surprisingly delicate, they played with the scale and material of traditional tableware pieces, supersizing each object and covering them in

white gold mosaic. The pieces worked very well as a whole, giving the clean white room a distinct Alice in Wonderland meets Gulliver’s Travels feel. Individually, our favourite was a gigantic wall-mounted spoon and the equally huge and impressive dish cover.Jaime Hayon’s collection, called Pixel Ballet’ experimented by applying gold and white mosaic to a range of very different pieces furniture and accessories. The vast and clearly Gaudi-inspired Pinocchione’ figure sits in the middle of his installation room. Taking three months to create and emblazoned in black and white mosaic, with a gold waistband, it acts as a fitting introductory centrepiece for the rest of his collection.

Focusing on organic shapes, he took for inspiration the fact that Bisazza have until now only produced mosaic coverings for wall-based items. I wanted to see how mosaic worked as a dcor for three-dimensional furniture too,’ says Hayon.Designer: Jaime Hayon & Studio Job/span>

PERISHED, Job Smeets is Belgian & Nynke Tynagel is Dutch.
A furniture ensemble, realised in precious hardened tropical woods, decorated with inlays depicting animal skeletons. It recalls art decò but also Flemish art and is proposed as a precious collector's set. The objects are used as canvases on which to write in ancient hieroglyphics or modern graffiti. The inlays were cut using high-tech lasers and assembled by expert craftsmen. "We want to create a collection that is exclusive for the quality of the materials and techniques; haute couture products that will last at least a hundred years,". http://www.dilmos.it/pagine/mostre/salone2006/foto.html
